Stretch of Highway 20 To Be Named in Honor of State Trooper

A section of State Route 20 in Bartow County will be named in honor of State Trooper Frederick Herman "Foots" Looney, who lost his life in line of duty on May 25, 1962, Georgia Department of Transportation Commissioner Keith Golden and Georgia Department of Public Safety Commissioner Colonel Mark McDonough announced Monday.

"A native of Cartersville, Georgia, Trooper Looney attended the 22nd Trooper School and was assigned to service in the city of Canton and exhibited extraordinary devotion to duty, outstanding loyalty to his colleagues and the State of Georgia, meticulous attention to details in his work and effective leadership," according to the press release. "Tragically, the life of this dedicated law enforcement officer was cut short from injuries he received in a patrol car crash on State Route 306 near Cumming."  

The crash happened during a vehicle pursuit, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.

To honor his life, the Georgia General Assembly passed a resolution to designate the portion of Georgia Highway 20 from the Cherokee County line to Interstate 75 in Bartow County as the Trooper Frederick Herman Looney Memorial Highway.

The dedication ceremony, in accordance with a legislative resolution, is set for Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013, at Atco Baptist Church, 20 Parmenter Drive in Cartersville. The public is invited to attend the ceremony, scheduled to take place between 10 and 11 a.m.
