Bakery to Hold Benefit, Silent Auction for Injured Lilburn Man

Charles Tumulak was paralyzed following a horrific fall in an obstacle course race. His family and friends continue to rally around him.

A metro Atlanta bakery will soon hold a fundraiser to benefit a Lilburn man, who was injured in a horrific accident in March.

The fundraiser takes place 7 a.m. - 9 p.m., May 18 at Canvas Cafe and Bakery, in Marietta. Proceeds will benefit Charles Tumulak, who was paralyzed from the neck down after falling 15 feet -- head first -- during an obstacle course race.

One of Tumulak's sisters, Leilani Townsend, said the bakery has "graciously taken it upon themselves to organize and put on this amazing event in which 100 percent of the proceeds will go to Charles."

Anything purchased during the daylong event and all monies raised from a silent auction will help defray some of Tumulak's housing and medical costs.

Items for the silent auction have been donated by a number of companies, including Home Depot, Joe's Crab Shack and Marietta's Gone with the Wind Museum.

In two weeks, Tumulak is expected back home in Lilburn, where he will need around-the-clock care. Since April 10, he has been recieving treatment at Atlanta's Shepherd Center.

"In his time at Shepherd, he has regained the ability to eat regular meals and talk for up to six hours a day," Townsend said. "He is still using a ventilator, unable to breathe without it.

"He continues with therapy and can now drive his own wheelchair using a sip and puff device."

Townsend said her brother is scheduled to be released from the hospital on May 28. Following that, he will move to his parents' Lilburn home.

In addition to attending the bakery event, community members may also help Tumulak by donating via www.gofundme.com/chuckstorm.

As of May 14, more than $31,000 has been raised.
