Inside the Police Reports: Man Tries to Get Pain Medicine With Fake Prescription

A pharmacist at a Walgreens saw a red flag when she received a refill prescription of Lortab from a 40-year-old Lilburn man.

A pharmacist was taking a long time with a Lilburn man's prescription for pain medication earlier this month not because she was busy with other medicines, but because she was checking that the prescription was legit.

According to the Gwinnett County Police report, the pharmacist at the Walgreens off Five Forks Trickum Road in Mountain Park called authorities when she saw a red flag for some medicine. A 40-year-old man had dropped off a prescription refill for the pain medication Lortab.

She discovered that the same man had received the same medicine two weeks before from a CVS in Lithonia. She contacted the other pharmacy, who said that they had verified the prescription with the doctor's office in McDonough.

The Walgreens pharmacist wasn't satisfied, so she called the doctor. The office had never verified the prescriptions, and the Lilburn man is not a patient of theirs.

The officer spoke with the customer, who appeared nervous. Contradicting what the prescription says, he told the officer that a doctor in Florida prescribed it to him because he used to live there and still vists often. He told police that he didn't know the doctor in McDonough, but it could have been called in by another doctor.

Other discrepancies popped up, too. The customer's birthday year on the original prescription and refill conflicted. Additionally, the customer gave police a phone number for the Florida doctor, and it turned out to be the number for the customer and his business.

He was arrested and charged with obtaining a controlled substance by fraud/forgery and criminal attempt.
