APD Hosts First-Ever Citywide Code Enforcement Training

Recently, the Atlanta Police Department’s Code Enforcement Section held its first citywide training. The three-day event introduced more than 100 attendees to international property maintenance and residential code.

According to a City of Atlanta release, the training also provided information on the legal aspects of code administration.

In partnership with the Atlanta Police Foundation and the American Association of Code Enforcement, the training helped to prepare code enforcement officers and inspectors from across the metro area as well as community leaders on how to effectively enforce city ordinances while ensuring safe and sanitary conditions in housing and commercial properties.

In 2011, code enforcement functions were formally moved to the Atlanta Police Department. Under the authority of the Atlanta Police Department, the Code Enforcement Section is able to function with eliberate control in resolving housing and commercial code violations throughout the City of Atlanta, and set in motion strategic plans to address quality of life issues, environmental concerns and improved property value by leveraging all available resources.

In the first few months under the leadership of the Atlanta Police Department, the Code Enforcement staff eliminated more than 4,500 backlogged cases. Since 2011, the City has demolished 131 structures and cleaned and closed 141 structures.
