Turner Field to be Sold to Georgia State

The university plans to transform the baseball stadium into a football stadium and plans to add student housing and retail to the site.

MIDTOWN, GA -- Georgia State University has won the bidding for Turner Field, according to a report.

The downtown university and its real estate partner Carter were chosen as the winning bid out of three submissions to buy the Atlanta Braves’ soon-to-be former ballpark, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. A purchase price has not been announced.

Georgia State University, long seen as the frontrunner for the stadium, has submitted a $300 million plan to convert Turner Field into a 30,000-seat football, soccer and track-and-field stadium. Their plan also calls for a new baseball park and academic buildings to go along with green space.

Midtown-based real estate developer Carter, along with Atlanta-based developer Columbia Residential, would construct a mixed-use of shops, restaurants, retail and single-family and market-rate apartment homes. The project would add possibly 1,200 beds for GSU students and much-needed parking, as well.

In late November, the GSU team was joined by Mercury Youth Organization and Rita World Pearl Kingdom as finalists for the site.
