Chancey to Take Over as Interim City Administrator On Sept. 28

Monroe City Planner Matthew Chancey has been appointed interim city administrator for the City of Monroe. He will begin his new position on Sept. 28

The Monroe City Council has appointed Matthew Chancey, 30, to the position of interim city administrator following Julian Jackson’s resignation last week. Chancey said he officially takes over the position on Sept. 28.

Monroe Mayor Greg Thompson said the council unanimously voted to appoint Chancey in the interim, but will start an extensive search for a replacement in January. However, he said he fully expects Chancey to apply for the permanent position at that time.

“He can most definitely do so,” Thompson said. “Matthew is a bright young man and wherever he lands, I hope he lands with the City of Monroe.”

Chancey said he is looking forward to his new role and confirmed he will most likely be applying for the permanent when it is made available. Chancey said he has been working with the city since he was 19. He graduated from Monroe Area High School in 2000. He went on to earn a master’s degree in public administration from Valdosta State University after graduating from the University of Georgia. He has held the position of Monroe city planner for the last two years.

Thompson he was sorry to lose Jackson.

“Anytime you lose a good employee like Julian, it is going to be a loss to the city, but the department will carry on the same tradition of serving the citizens of the city,” Thompson said. “Anyone that is not familiar with the inner workings of the city is not even going to notice a change.”
