Funeral Service for Navy Recruit from Monroe, Ga. Scheduled for Thursday

Dawn Holt, 36, was killed in a car accident on Jan. 24, 2013 while serving with the U.S. Navy in Naples, Italy.

According to the Stars and Stripes, Petty Officer 3rd Class Dawn Holt, 36, was killed in a head on collision in Naples, Italy, on Jan. 24, 2013, while stationed there serving with the U.S. Navy. The Navy reports that Holt enlisted with the Navy from her hometown of Monroe, Ga. in 2007. She was assigned to headquarters command of Naval Supply Systems Command Fleet Logistics Center Sigonella but stationed was stationed in Naples.

The Italian newspaper Il Mattino reported that the collision occurred in the Pozzuoli suburb of Naples at about 2:21 p.m. when Holt was travelling on a rain-flooded roadway. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

“This is a great loss to our Navy family,” Capt. Robert Gantt, commanding officer of NAVSUP FLC Sigonella, said in a statement, “Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends during this most difficult time.”

Sharon Hicklin, of Monroe, said Holt used to babysit her two boys when they were children.

“She was so sweet, they loved her,” Hicklin said.

Stars and Stripes reports that Holt also served at Recruit Training Command at Great Lakes, Ill., Naval Technical Training Center in Meridian, Miss., and aboard the aircraft carrier USS George Washington. Memorial services were held for her in Italy before her body was returned to the U.S. for a funeral service this week in Snellville.

According to Wages Funeral Home, a funeral services for Holt will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013 at Tom M. Wages Snellville Chapel. Interment will follow at Georgia National Cemetery, Canton. The family will receive friends from 5 – 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013 at the funeral home. Condolences may be viewed or sent to www.wagesfuneralhome.com. Tom M.
