Powerball Jackpot hits $500 Million

With a run on sales before Wednesday's Powerball drawing, the purse has swelled to $500 million to a single winner with a $327 million cash option. States participating, however, are already winners.

With the record Powerball jackpot rolling over again on Saturday, the purse for Wednesday night's drawing has now swelled to a whopping half a billion dollars to a single winner. The higher the pot goes, the more people take a chance on that $2 ticket. The cash option in this case is now $327 million. Odds of winning though are not that good – 1 in 175 million. However, if you don’t have a ticket your odds go down to zero.

According to a story in Fox News, no matter who wins there are several winners already – namely the 42 states, plus Washington DC and the Virgin Islands, that run the lottery. About 35 percent of the profit goes to state causes. In most instances, such as Georgia, the biggest beneficiaries are students attending college. The more the lottery rolls over, the more the states - and the students - win.

So, do you have your ticket yet?
