Nine Apps, Two Games, One Big Sale

Here's what you should know to start Aug. 19 in Northeast Cobb.

1. August returns with a vengeance today. It should be hot and humid with a high of about 93 and a 30 percent chance of showers this afternoon, the National Weather Service says. The overnight low will be around 69, and there’s a slight chance of rain.

2. Mount Paran North Church of God will play host to a 400-family consignment sale today and Saturday. .

4. The high school football season kicks off Saturday at the Georgia Dome with the Corky Kell Classic, a Cobb-vs.-Gwinnett quadrupleheader. It starts with two games featuring Northeast Cobb teams: playing Grayson at 11:45 a.m. and against Brookwood at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $12. Northeast Cobb Patch will have photo galleries from the Kell and Lassiter games Sunday.

5. Things have felt almost staged this week as our state legislators have played predictable roles in redistricting. As expected, the Republican majority has quickly pushed through new maps for the state House and Senate, and as soon as each chamber signs off on the other’s plan, the maps will head to Gov. Nathan Deal for his signature. , of course, try to squeeze out every bit of advantage for the Republicans who made them. Meanwhile, the Democrats are crying foul, claiming violations of the Voting Rights Act and preparing to take the fight to court. They’ll get back to work Monday. We saw it all in reverse a decade ago, when the Democrats had the majority; let’s hope redistricting doesn’t take five more years of court rulings and legislative do-overs to resolve, as it did last time.
