First Frost Expected Tonight, Early in the Morning

Dig those jackets out of the closet. It's about to get chilly in north Georgia.

If you've yet toΒ dig those jackets and coats out of the closet, today may beΒ the day to consider getting ready for some chilly weather.

The National Weather Service has issued a frost advisory,Β in effect from 2 to 9 a.m. Thursday,Β for portions ofΒ north and central Georgia. Temperatures are expected to range from the lower toΒ middle 30s, mainly along and north of a line fromΒ LaGrange to the city ofΒ Forsythe to Warrenton.Β Sensitive outdoor plants could be killed if left uncovered, according to the advisory.

The late-October chill will result fromΒ surges of cold air expected to plunge into the eastern half of the country with a dip in the jet stream, reports the Weather Channel. Some cities will see their first frost or freeze of the season, with low temps in theΒ Midwest dipping to the 20s or low 30s, and in the Southeast, to the low 30s as far south as north Georgia.

In the metro area, expect patchy frost and a low near 40Β Wednesday night and areas of frost through Thursday morning, according to the NWS forecast. The highs are expected to reach the low 60s.Β

A frost advisory means that frost is expected. The areaΒ could see another frost Friday night and early Saturday morning and maybe a freeze warning for parts of northern Georgia, according to the NWS' hazardous weather outlook.

How do you prepare for colder weather, a frost or a freeze?
