Lassiter Alum Isom Is LSU's Queen

alumna Mo Isom might have been disappointed at the ending to her college soccer career Friday, but she was all smiles the next night when was named the 2011 homecoming queen for Louisiana State University.

The senior from Northeast Cobb became the first athlete crowned LSU’s homecoming queen, the university’s athletic department reported.

Isom has a history of beauty pageant success, so it was not a shock that the student body elected her—except to Isom herself.

“When they announced my name as queen, I was literally in shock,” the broadcast journalism major told the athletic department. “I’m so proud to be a Tiger. I’m also honored that the students here would elect me to represent them as a homecoming queen. I love everything about this state, this city and this school.”

Both of the other candidates for queen were from Louisiana.

The ceremony came the day after LSU, the Southeastern Conference runner-up, lost to Texas A&M, 4-0, on the road in the first round of the NCAA tournament to end the year.

Isom, 22, the Tigers’ starting goalie since she arrived in Baton Rouge in 2008, compiled a 1.07 goals-against average this season. LSU, which finished the season 13-8-1, had a record of 13-5-1 with Isom in goal.

For her career, she allowed 0.86 goals per game and saved more than 79 percent of the shots she faced in 73 games, 30 of which were shutouts.

She also memorably scored a goal that traveled most of the length of the field as a freshman.

“It is our goal to recruit well-rounded student-athletes into our program here at LSU, and Mo has certainly represented herself, her family, our program and this great university with class since the day she first set foot on campus as a freshman four years ago,” LSU head coach Brian Lee said. “We're proud to have had Mo as a part of this program and know that she has a great future in front of her.”

An award-winning moment close to home also could be in her future.

Heading into the final hours of voting for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award for women’s soccer, Isom was a close second Central Florida’s Aline Reis. The award honors a senior who has demonstrated excellence in four areas: community, classroom, character and competition.

The winner will receive the award during the Women’s College Cup, the soccer Final Four, being played at on Dec. 2 and 4.
