Poll: Will You Participate in Bank Transfer Day?

Americans across the nation are closing major bank accounts and transferring their money to a local credit union on Saturday.

When decided to charge a fee on debit card use or if I failed to meet a minimum balance, I switched to . The minimum balance wasn't the issue. I was annoyed at paying a debit card use fee.

At Kroger today, a woman in the checkout line talked with me about Bank Transfer Day this Saturday. I had no idea that there was an organized effort by Americans to transfer money from major banks to credit unions.

I suspected the Occupy Wall Street movement had something to do with it, but was surprised to learn it was conceived by a young gallery owner in Los Angeles named Kristen Christian. Fed up with Bank of America, she suggested on Facebook making Nov. 5 β€œBank Transfer Day." In just a month, Christian’s Bank Transfer Day page on Facebook has picked up 35,711 β€œlikes" and over 35,000 people have RSVP'd β€œyes” to making the move.

Supporters say that they are pulling money out of for-profit banks and moving it to local credit unions for the following reasons:

  • Americans being treated like a second class citizens by the bankers we bailed out a couple of years ago.
  • To punish the banking industry for rewarding their epic failures with billions in bonuses after the bailout.
  • To stop the financial institutions of this country from gambling away the global economy and making our grandkids pay when the bookie comes to collect.

If you are considering the transfer from a for-profit bank to a credit union, watch the accompanying video which explains the difference between the two.
