8 Oconee Tennis Players Compete at the Georgia State High School Team Championships

The co-ed Oconee Blue Bears participated in the tournament held in Alpharetta on Dec. 8-9.

The Georgia State High School Team Championships were recently held Dec. 8-9 in Alpharetta, with eight players from Oconee County participating. The team participated under the team name of the Oconee Blue Bears.

Participating for the girls were Katy Kane, Megan Morris and Erin Horsley, all from OCHS. Caroline Doherty, of Athens Academy, was also part of the team for the girls. On the boys' side, players included Drew Horsley, Dan Madden, Will McDonald and Hunter Pritchard, all of the OCHS varsity tennis
team.Β

The tournament included teams, from the Atlanta area including Blessed Trinity, Gainesville, Lanier, Mill Creek, Lambert, Parkview and Westminster. Oconee was the only non-Atlanta area school to compete. The Blue Bears played extremely well, despite the fact that two key players, Zach Miner and Jordan England, were sidelined with the flu.

The team got a key third round upset win 3-2 over Parkview, which enabled them to qualify for the third place championship. They were edged there by
Westminster by a 3-2 score, in a very close match.Β

Individually, the Blue Bears got wins against Mill Creek (Will McDonald,
singles, 6-3, 6-0); against Lanier (Drew Horsley/Hunter Pritchard, doubles,
6-2, 1-6, 1-0(8) and Caroline Doherty/Will McDonald, mixed doubles, 6-0,
6-0); versus Parkview (Drew Horsley, singles, 6-3, 2-6, 1-0(8), Dan Madden/Will McDonald, doubles, 5-7, 6-2, 1-0(7) and Katy Kane/Erin Horsley,
