Great music and a great cause come together Nov. 18.
On that night at the Melting Point in downtown Athens, the North Georgia Jaycees will host a concert featuring Shawn Mullins, benefitting Watkinsville-based Extra Special People Inc. (ESP). The concert will help raise the funds needed for ESP to send 40 people – families from all over Northeast Georgia – to Camp Dream for a special family camp weekend in the spring.
“This is something we've wanted to do for a long time: to give families a weekend together in an environment uniquely suited for their special children,” said Laura Whitaker, executive director of ESP. “It's always been too expensive, and so the North Georgia Jaycees are doing something amazing for some of the most deserving families in our community. These are families that experience a lot of stress and anxiety caring for children with serious disabilities, and to give them a weekend in which someone else caters to them and gives them opportunities to have unbridled fun together – that's pretty magical.”

Camp Dream is located in North Georgia, and is uniquely designed to cater to special-needs children. The concert will defray the cost of attendance for families, and offer an opportunity for concert-goers to hear Atlanta-based singer-songwriter Shawn Mullins sing old favorites like the chart-toppers “Lullaby” (1999) and “Beautiful Wreck” (2006), as well as songs from his latest album, “Light You Up,” released in October.
The doors open at 7:30 p.m., with Mullins taking the stage from 9 to 10:30 p.m., Nov. 18. Visitmeltingpointathens.com to buy tickets, which are $20 plus a $2 convenience fee.
