Oconee County Schools Inclement Weather Protocol

The following is an announcement from John Jackson, superintendent of Oconee County Schools:

Just so you are aware of the decision-making process we use in determining whether to close or postpone the start of school, here are the steps we take:

  • The Transportation Director and the Assistant Superintendent for Student Services travel the roads in Oconee County from 4:30 a.m. - 5:30 a.m.
  • The Superintendent meets with them and the Oconee County Emergency Operations Director to discuss plans at 5:30 a.m.
  • The Superintendent calls the Principals between 5:30 a.m. - 6:00 a.m. if there is a decision to close or delay the opening of school.
  • The Assistant Superintendent for Student Services sends out an all-call to parents via the Teleparent telephone service using contact numbers on file in our student information system (PowerSchool). He also notifies television stations (channells 2, 5 and 11) and local radio stations by 6:00 a.m.
  • A notice is posted on the school system website (www.oconeeschools.org) by 6:00 a.m.
  • If a decision can be made the night prior to the school day affected, a TV broadcast will appear on the late edition news and followed up as mentioned earlier.
