Pepper Spray in Classroom Forces Evacuation

Gwinnett County Fire said the Monday morning incident at Shiloh High School happened after 10 a.m.

More than two dozen high school students were exposed to pepper spray in a Gwinnett County classroom Monday morning, according to authorities.

Gwinnett Fire spokesman Lt. Jerrod Barrett said 11 of the 28 students in the Shiloh High School classroom were treated and released. Many students had been coughing.

The incident happened after 10 a.m. Monday. All of the students have returned to their normal schedules.

Fire crews responded to the school, located at 4210 Shiloh Road in unincorporated Snellville, at 10:25 a.m. on a call regarding an irritant released inside the classroom. The area was evacuated as a hazardous material team investigated.

“After working with the schools resource officer it was determined that the irritant released was pepper spray,” Barrett said.
