Speak Out: Do You #StandwithRand?
As Twitter explodes with the hashtag #standwithrand, Rand Paul is mounting a filibuster in the Senate over concerns about the administration's drone policy.
In a move that brings to mind Paul Revere -- but with shouts of "the drones are coming, the drones are coming" -- Rand Paul is, as of 9:30 p.m. Wednesday night, in his ninth hour of speaking in an attempt to mount a filibuster. He is hoping to delay the nomination of John Brennan as CIA director, according to Fox News.
Brennan is currently President Obama's chief counterterrorism advisor. He was Obama's top pick for CIA director in 2008, but his support of former president Bush's interrogation techniques caused division, according to the Washington Post. In a 2012 interview with NPR, he discussed the ethics of drones in warfare and potential challenges.
According to Amnesty International, John Brennan is "one of the chief architects of the administration's drone killing policy, which has reportedly resulted in 4,700 people killed so far."

Dan Gordon, former Rhode Island representative, tweeted "Could this be the last stand against tyranny? Very much so.#filiblizzard #StandWithRand Lead on, General!"
Sarah Palin even chimed in, tweeting "Proud to #standwithrand since 2009. GOP, we need more courage like this!"
So what's going on?
Paul sent Attorney General Eric Holder a letter, asking whether the administration would ever condone drone strikes against Americans on American soil. Holder stated that the U.S. government has "not carried out drone strikes in the United States and has no intention of doing so."
However, he ended with the following statement:
"It is possible, I suppose, to imagine an extraordinary circumstance in which it would be necessary and appropriate under the Constitution and applicable laws of the United States for the president to authorize the military to use lethal force within the territory of the United States."

Nathan Horton, membership director of the Gwinnett County Libertarians sent the following statement to Snellville Patch concerning the filibuster:
"While Senator Paul does not always line up with our Libertarian viewpoints, tonight we celebrate Rand Paul’s brilliant performance and filibuster while demanding the protections guaranteed to all Americans under the Constitution, and fighting for answers from the administration regarding their domestic drone programs. It is nice to finally see a member of the GOP stand up for what is right. We hope to see more courage demonstrated by more Congress members in the fight against CISPA, DOMA, NDAA, and a variety of other legislation that strips the rights and freedoms away from American citizens."
--What do you think? Much ado about nothing? Or is this a historic moment on the Senate floor?
