Emory Hospital ER to Get Facelift

The Emergency Department at is preparing for a major expansion that will double the size of the emergency room space.

The renovation, which is set to begin in August, will provide the department with 19,000 square-feet, 32 private exam rooms and X-ray technology.

The department currently occupies a 9,600 square-foot space and has 21 exam rooms.

"I liken our space to a hermit crab," Emergency physician Dr. Matthew Keadey told an Emory News reporter.

The emergency department continues to see more and more patients each year, and doctors say there is a serious need to expand the space.

In 2000, the emergency department treated about 15,000 patients. They currently see about 36,000 patients per year in a space that was never intended to be an emergency department.

"We had a shell, and we backed into it," Keadey said. He’s been at Emory since 2000.
