Napolitano To Speak at Emory Graduation

Janet Napolitano, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary, will address Emory University class of 2011 graduates.

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano will address the graduating class at in May.

Napolitano, former Governor and Attorney General of Arizona, is the third Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.

Napolitano’s position was created after the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001. She is responsible for overseeing counterterrorism and border security measures, among other security and disaster-related issues.

Time Magazine named her one of the top five governors in the country in 2005 and she was the first woman to chair the National Governors Association, according to a news release from Emory University.

“As our graduating students set forth to shape their own lives and careers, they will be well served by the example of Janet Napolitano, who has used her exceptional intelligence, integrity and humanity in behalf of positive transformation in the world," Emory President James W. Wagner said in the news release.

About 3,600 students will walk in the May 9 graduation ceremony on the university quadrangle. The University estimates roughly 14,000 people will attend.
