Packages to Atlanta Residents Show no Signs of Slowing in 2023

Multifamily landlords and property managers look for technology-enabled solutions to accept, manage and safely secure incoming packages

(ButterflyMX )

(Atlanta) March 21, 2023 -- ButterflyMX, the leading provider of smartphone-based access control technology for multifamily, commercial, student housing, and gated properties, today released data showing the growth of package deliveries to Atlanta residents at multifamily properties. With an apartment stock at 438,942 units, Atlanta package deliveries across ButterflyMX’s platform saw significant growth in the later part of 2022, creating new security challenges for property owners and managers.

According to the census bureau, more than 6 million people now live in the Atlanta region. “Atlanta is a continued economic bright spot in the United States with rapid growth across the region,” explains Aaron Rudenstine, CEO of ButterflyMX. “Estimates from economists say that the region has approximately 50% more people from 20 years ago.”

That growth does not seem to be slowing down anytime soon as financial and tech firms continue to flock to the region, he adds. “The current challenge, though, is that the multifamily sector is entering a cooling period as the supply is catching up to that demand surge the city received during the pandemic.”

With growing supply and growing household formation comes more package deliveries. “Everyone from city planners to building managers are coping with the rise of e-commerce and looking to technology to ensure resident packages are secure and their time is not wasted on dealing with the consequences of stolen or misplaced deliveries,” explained Cyrus Claffey, founder of ButterflyMX.

He adds that through the company’s mobile-based platform, residents can ensure their packages are always delivered. “Buildings without doormen, package rooms or other secure areas to store deliveries—which can include anything from weekly groceries to mattresses—are more likely to deal with package theft, a burden for both residents and property managers, who are often called on to help investigate stolen packages reported to law enforcement or delivery services.”

ButterflyMX has seen a 4.5% adoption rate in the city as more property owners and managers strive to tackle the “package problem” and differentiate their offerings. The company analyzed data gathered from more than 19,734 apartment units in the Atlanta area to measure and understand resident behavior.

ButterflyMX reported the following trends in Atlanta and the surrounding areas:

  1. Atlanta is reporting package delivery growth quarter over quarter across the ButterflyMX platform, with growth of 11% in the fourth quarter of 2022.
  2. Between the year timeframe of 3/9/22 and 3/9/23, Atlanta and the surrounding area saw 7,104 package deliveries to the apartment units that ButterflyMX tracks. Unlike the growth that many other cities in the US saw during the same period, that number is down from 16,483 package deliveries during the same time period the year prior.
  3. The city of Atlanta and its surrounding area accounted for approximately 71% of the 9,959 package deliveries to the state of Georgia during the time period of 1/30/22 and 1/30/23.
  4. Remote door management, which gives residents the ability to securely allow guests into their building without requiring the resident to be on site, doubled across ButterflyMX’s platform in 2022 and has emerged as a major differentiator for residents across the nation’s apartment properties.
