28 More Kmart Stores To Close, Including Illinois Locations

HOFFMAN ESTATES, IL — Twenty-eight more Sears-owned Kmart stores will soon close in addition to the 180 company stores already announced this year. The Chicago location at 3443 W. Addison St. will stay open, but stores in Oak Lawn and Elmhurst are shutting down. The closings were announced by Sears Holding Corp., the Hoffman Estates-based retailer that owns the stores and reported another quarterly operating loss.

Thanks in part to shoppers migrating to the web from the malls, Sears sales at stores open for at least a year fell 11.5 percent in the second quarter ended July 29, the company announced.

Dozens of Sears and Kmart stores have already closed this year as the company tries to overcome steep losses in sales and huge operating costs. Earlier this summer, the company announced it was closing its Harlem Avenue Sears store on the Northwest Side in September. The Hoffman Estates-based retailer also cut 400 corporate jobs, mostly from its headquarters.
