Man Who Fatally Shot Wife While She Held Their 1-Year-Old Pleads Guilty

The Arlington Heights-area man was sentenced to 38 years in prison Thursday stemming from the 2016 shooting.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL — An Arlington Heights-area man admitted Thursday to fatally shooting his wife while she held his year-old child last year. Jose Arturo Salgado-Roque, 43, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and was sentenced to 38 years in prison as part of a deal with prosecutors stemming from the shooting death of Divina Salgado, 36, in July of 2016 in unincorporated Arlington Heights, according to the Arlington Heights Post.

According to police, Salgado-Roque shot his wife as she walked into their house carrying their son, who fell to the ground and cut his head. Prosecutors claimed Salgado-Roque was upset that his wife had planned to divorce him, and he told two of his sons — ages 15 and 18 — that he was going to kill her.

During Salgado-Roque's sentencing, Cook County Judge Marc Martin said the defendant appeared to be remorseful for the crime, the Post reports. The judge also lamented the toll Salgado-Roque's actions will have on his children, the report added. Salgado-Roque had four sons with Salgado, and the two had been married for 18 years.
