More Illinois Sears Stores Closing

The company that owns Sears and Kmart recently announced major store closures across the United States.

ILLINOIS — Transformco, the parent company of Illinois-based Sears and Kmart, announced Thursday it plans shut another 96 stores by February, including two more locations in Illinois.

Closing sales at a Peoria Sears location, 2200 W. War Memorial Drive, as well as the Spring Hill Mall location in West Dundee will begin Dec. 2, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The latest round of closures is expected to shutter 51 Sears stores and 45 Kmart location across the nation. In the last 15 years, Sears and Kmart have closed more than 3,500 stores.

Neither retailer has yet specified the locations that will be closed, but for now, nothing is off the table.

Here are the remaining Kmart locations in Illinois, which will dwindle to one by the new year:

  • Bridgeview (scheduled to close during a round of closings announced in September)
  • Des Plaines

It’s not all bad news for the national retailers, though. Transformco also said Thursday that it had secured a $250 million lifeline that should help the company better focus on its “competitive strengths.”

Sears and Kmart are part of a growing list of brick-and-mortar establishments that have seen a nosedive in revenue and popularity with the emergence of e-commerce companies such as Amazon and Walmart.

The closings are the latest round for the company since August, when Sears announced 26 closings nationwide, including one Illinois store at Stratford Square in Bloomingdale.
