51 Coronavirus Cases In West Aurora Schools Since Reopening

Those cases include seven students who are attending class or participating in school-sponsored activities.

AURORA, IL — More than three dozen teachers and employees within West Aurora District 129 tested positive for the coronavirus in the first quarter of the new school year, despite almost all classes being held remotely until this week.

The district’s coronavirus dashboard shows 44 coronavirus cases among District 129 staff since Sept. 10, including eight employees at West Aurora High School and seven at Greenman Elementary.

Seven students who are attending in-person class or participating in school-sponsored activities have also tested positive over that period, the dashboard shows. Five of those students attend West Aurora High School.

Students in District 129's Career and Technical Education program, transition programs and other alternative programs were brought back to school in September, with officials believing in-person learning would be most beneficial to those groups.

The district on Monday welcomed back small groups of students in first and sixth grades, as well as some high school freshmen. Under the district’s current plans, pre-K students, kindergartners and seventh-graders would return Nov. 16; and students in second, third and eighth grades would return Nov. 30.

Students in fourth and fifth grade are set to return Dec. 7, according to the district's plans. High school students in District 129 are expected to continue learning from home through the end of 2020.

While District 129 officials are starting to bring back some students, East Aurora District 131 is set to continue operating fully remotely at least through the end of the year. East Aurora Superintendent cited a “prevailing high number” of coronavirus cases in the area when announcing the delayed return to in-person instruction.

West Aurora District 129's main ZIP code, 60506, accounts for about 31 percent of all coronavirus cases in Aurora, with 2,373 since the start of the pandemic, according to statistics from the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Aurora has recorded 7,691 coronavirus cases and 133 related deaths since the start of the pandemic, according to the city’s statistics.
