Aurora To Host 'Listening Sessions' On Police Reform
As part of the city's CHANGE initiative, officials will hold five Thursday night events to hear from residents about policing in Aurora.

AURORA, IL — Officials in Aurora are set to host five “community listening sessions” over the coming month to continue hearing from residents about policing in the city.
After widespread protests against police brutality after George Floyd’s killing in May, Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin launched the CHANGE initiative to reform the Aurora Police Department’s policies and practices.

The initiative included 10 sessions in July at which residents and officials discussed the department’s use-of-force and training policies and crafted recommendations for reforms.
Throughout those sessions, residents consistently urged city officials to host more events for residents to share their thoughts on policing, according to a news release.

City officials will hold listening session at 6 p.m. each Thursday from Oct. 8 through Nov. 5 at locations throughout the city. Residents must register to participate, as each session will have a limited capacity due to public health guidelines.
Irvin’s CHANGE initiative also calls for the city to establish a civilian review board, implement a body-camera program for officers and alter some police training policies. Aurora officials are working to secure body cameras, but the program is not expected to be in place until mid-2021, the Aurora Beacon-News reports.
