Aurora Man To Serve 14 Years For Robbing Convenience Store

A 24-year-old Aurora man was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty to a June 2018 armed robbery, according to prosecutors.

AURORA, IL — An Aurora man was sentenced Tuesday to spend 14 years in prison after admitting to robbing an Aurora convenience store two years ago, according to Kane County prosecutors.

Clayton Vaughan, 24, pleaded guilty to armed robbery in connection with a June 2018 incident at a convenience store in the 900 block of South Lake Street, State’s Attorney Jim McMahon said in a news release.

Vaughan jumped over a counter at the store around 10:45 p.m. June 30, 2018, and attacked the owner with a metal pipe, prosecutors and police have said.

The owner tried to scare Vaughan away with a handgun, but Vaughan gained control of the gun, as previously reported. A shot was fired into the ceiling during the struggle, according to police.

Vaughan and the store owner both ran away from the store after the attack. Vaughan was identified through surveillance footage and help from residents, as previously reported. He was arrested a week and a half later by Geneva police.

He will receive credit for serving more than two years in Kane County jail between his arrest and his plea, prosecutors said.
