Aurora Mayor Calls Out Kane County Sheriff For 'Disparaging Comments'
The sheriff "falsely accused" Aurora police of being responsible for the actions that led to a K-9's death in May 2023, officials said.
AURORA, IL — Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin and Chief of Police Keith Cross are accusing Kane County Sheriff Ron Hain of making "disparaging comments" about the Aurora Police Department last week.
City officials said in a media alert Monday that the sheriff "falsely accused the Aurora Police Department of being responsible for the actions that led to the death" of K-9 Hudson during a ceremony for the Dutch shepherd Friday.
Hain's comments at the ceremony, during which a statue of Hudson was unveiled, were "laughingly incredible and absolutely wrong, but sadly, indicative of the Ron Hain playbook," Irvin said, according to an article from the Chicago Sun-Times published Sunday.

"As usual, Sheriff Hain takes every opportunity to bring the spotlight to himself, even during a ceremony reserved to commemorate the life of a brave canine officer," Irvin said Friday, according to Clayton Muhammad, chief engagement officer and senior advisor to the mayor.
It's not the first time Irvin called Hain out for comments he claims were "untrue and unfavorable" about the Aurora Police Department. In late May, the mayor took a few minutes during a City Hall meeting to share a statement accusing Hain of compromising a May 2023 undercover police detail and his "misplaced and unsubstantiated conjecture, rumors and innuendo" about the investigation made in a May 24 Sun-Times article, Patch reported.
The investigation led to Jim Moriarty, 38, being fatally shot by Kane County sheriff's police. A vehicle pursuit, which started as a carjacking in Aurora, ensued from South Elgin to Batavia before the suspect and K-9 Hudson were killed, Patch reported.
The Kane County Sheriff's Office released a statement almost a week after the incident, saying deputies saw a gun before shooting the suspect, at which time Hudson was also struck and killed.
