Aurora Seeks Volunteers For Final Census Push On Saturday

Mayor Richard Irvin is hoping volunteers can knock on 10,000 doors Saturday morning to boost the city's response rate.

AURORA, IL — Aurora officials are urging residents to help them boost the city’s census-response rate by helping them knock on thousands of doors Saturday morning. The city is seeking volunteers from 10 a.m. to noon.

During a Community Census Day event last month, about 60 volunteers significantly raised the response rate in some undercounted neighborhoods in the city, and officials are hoping for a similar turnout this time around with less than a week left for residents to complete the form.

“It’s all hands on deck for the final countdown,” Mayor Richard Irvin said. “We see the direct impact of being in our neighborhoods and plan to visit more than 10,000 houses in our lowest response areas on Saturday.”

Americans have until Sept. 30 to complete the U.S. Census Bureau’s questionnaire. The census, conducted every 10 years, is used to determine Aurora’s share of federal and state funding to municipalities, including income tax, motor fuel tax and other tax revenues.
