District 204 Extends Deadline To Choose Remote, Hybrid Learning

District officials are also looking to push back the start of the upcoming school year until Sept. 3.

AURORA, IL — Families in Indian Prairie School District 204 will have a few extra days to opt between full-time remote learning or a hybrid schedule, after officials announced Wednesday they had extended the deadline.

The start of the new school year is also set to be delayed to give officials and families time to prepare, Superintendent Adrian Talley wrote in a message to the District 204 community.

Students who register for the hybrid model will be split into two groups based on their last names, district officials have said. Each group will spend two days in school and two learning at home per week, with Mondays set to be used for "whole class remote instruction, individual student support and teacher prep time," Talley said in a previous letter.

About three-quarters of parents and staff members said in a districtwide survey that a hybrid learning model was their first or second preference. Talley has warned that schools will not be able to open without restrictions until Illinois reaches phase 5 of its reopening plan.

All students who attend in-person classes will be required to follow public health guidelines, which call for masks to be worn and social distance to be maintained inside facilities.

District officials will ask the Board of Education at its meeting Monday to push back the school year’s start from Aug. 20 until Sept. 3. That would give the district more time to create schedules, figure out how to best place its teachers and work with students to revise courses if necessary, Talley said.

A revised calendar for the upcoming school year is expected to be presented at the Board of Education’s Aug. 10 meeting.

The superintendent said district administrators heard directly from more than 2,000 parents over the past few weeks as they worked to create a plan to safely reopen, while more than 10,000 parents completed a survey on reopening.

“It is clear that as a community, we deeply care about children,” Talley wrote. “I appreciate your patience as we revise our plan to provide the best educational experience possible under these challenging times.”
