Drive-Thru Events To Prepare Aurora Students For New School Year

City officials are hosting four back-to-school fairs this weekend where students can pick up free school supplies.

AURORA, IL — Students across Aurora can pick up free school supplies this weekend at back-to-school fairs hosted by city officials and local organizations.

Four fairs will be held throughout the city, with officials encouraging residents to drive if they are able to limit contact amid the coronavirus pandemic, though residents who walk to the events will also be given free school supplies, according to a new release.

Aurora Aldermen Sherman Jenkins, Bill Donnell and Mike Saville are partnering with the African American Men of Unity to host the first school-supply giveaway Friday evening.

The aldermen and staff from the Aurora nonprofit will be handing out free school supplies and free groceries to families starting at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Greene Field Park, located at 774 Illinois Ave., the release states.

Ward 2 Alderwoman Juany Garza and the Ward 2 Committee are set to hand out school supplies and snow cones starting at 9 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Church, located at 771 Fulton St.

The City of Aurora and Communities In Schools are sponsoring the 26th annual Aurora Back to School Fair, where students can pick up free school supplies. The drive-thru fair starts at 1 p.m. Saturday at Phillips Park, located at 100 Ray Moses Dr.

Ward 7 Alderwoman Scheketa Hart-Burns and the Main Baptist Church, with support from other community organizations, will be giving students free school supplies, backpacks, clothes and snacks Sunday afternoon. The 33rd Annual Back-to-School Bash starts at 1 p.m. Sunday at Martin Luther King Jr. Park at Grand Boulevard and Farnsworth Avenue, the release states.
