Garage Fire On Aurora’s Far East Side Causes $20K In Damage
A resident tried to put out the fire before reporting it, officials said, urging people to call 911 first.
AURORA, IL — A property on Aurora’s far east side sustained about $20,000 worth of damage after a resident tried to put out a garage fire before dialing 911, fire officials said.
A resident at a five-unit townhome complex in the 3200 block of Pennsbury Court called 911 around 3:35 p.m. July 30 after failing to put out a fire in an attached garage, according to a news release. More than a dozen firefighters quickly put out the flames before they spread to the rest of the building, the release states.
Though the garage sustained about $20,000 in damage, all five units were deemed to be habitable, and no residents or firefighters were hurt, the release states.

“The Aurora Fire Department would like to highlight the importance of calling 911 BEFORE attempting extinguishment,” officials said Monday in a Facebook post. “This is because a fire can rapidly spread and any delay in notifying the fire department can lead to further extensive damage if it cannot be extinguished quickly.”
