Garage Fire Spreads Into Aurora House, Displacing 8 Residents: AFD

Upon arriving at the one-story ranch, crews found heavy fire in the attached garage that had spread into the rest of the residence.

AURORA, IL — A garage fire that spread further into an Aurora house Sept. 8 displaced eight residents, including two children, according to firefighters.

A total of 23 personnel, including two trucks, four engines, two medic units and three chief officers, were called at 12:55 a.m. to a ranch in the 600 block of Saddle Lane for a report of a garage fire.

The initial alarm was upgraded to a second alarm while crews were en route after the homeowner reported significant fire activity and confirmed all residents were safely out of the house, according to a news release.

A heavy fire was found coming from the attached garage and had extended into the single-story house. Officials said crews were able to extinguish both fires without further spread.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The homeowner sustained a minor burn on his arm while attempting to put out the fire before crews arrived and was treated on the scene. No firefighters reported injuries.

Red Cross and Victim Services were called to assist the family with temporary housing.

"The quick actions of our firefighters prevented this fire from spreading further into the home," Fire Chief David McCabe said in a statement. "This is a reminder of the importance of fire safety and the dangers of trying to fight a fire yourself before help arrives."
