Longest-Serving Teacher In Aurora Honored Before Retirement

After 55 years, Aurora's longest-serving teacher is retiring this month.

AURORA, IL — After 55 years, Laura Waegner, Aurora's longest-serving educator, is hanging up her teaching cap to retire this month.

A teacher at Holy Angels Catholic School since 1970, Waegner was honored by Mayor Richard Irvin during mass Friday morning.

The teacher taught at Holy Angels for 54 years after her initial year at St. Rita School in Aurora. Waegner spent the majority of her career teaching middle school studies.

"Known as an 'institution' at the school, Waegner has taught the grandchildren of students she had back when she first started over half a century ago," Chief Engagement Officer Clayton Muhammad wrote in a news release.
