Mayor Surprised With Award For Empowering Black, Minority Contractors

AURORA, IL — Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin was surprised Tuesday night with an award from the Black Contractors, Owners and Executives for his commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

Irvin is the recipient of the national, Chicago-based organization's 2024 Advocacy Award, the group's highest honor.

"Your dedication to public service and empowering communities through social change and political organizing has not gone unnoticed," BCEO Vice President Rod Young said. "We greatly admire your commitment to safety, education and economic development. However, what has truly captured our attention is your unwavering commitment to integrating and empowering Black and minority contractors in a system that has historically left us out."

Irvin said this is his responsibility as mayor.

"As mayor, it is my responsibility that everyone in our community has an equal opportunity to succeed," Irvin said as he accepted the award. "When I have an opportunity to help our disenfranchised communities, it is my responsibility to do just that."

The organization represents about 180 Black general contractors and thousands of employees. The group is committed to supporting Black contractors and industry professionals through education, mentoring, advocacy and legislation resulting in the economic growth and advancement of Black communities, according to a news release.
