Pedestrian, 72, Killed In Pickup Truck Crash: Aurora Police
Aurora police said the driver noticed the pedestrian and attempted to stop but couldn't in time to avoid collision.

AURORA, IL — A woman, 72, was killed after pickup truck crashed into her at about 5:45 p.m. Oct. 3 at the intersection of East New York Street and West Park Place, police said.
The woman was identified as Maria Herrera, of the 1300 block of Solfisburg Avenue in Aurora.
Preliminary investigations indicated Herrera was crossing the street while looking at her phone when she was struck by 2016 Chevrolet Silverado making a southbound turn onto Park Place from New York Street. In a news release Tuesday, police said the driver noticed the pedestrian and attempted to stop but couldn’t avoid collision, which occurred at a low speed.

Herrera was transported Ascension Mercy Hospital by Aurora Fire Department personnel and later airlifted to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries the following day.
“Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones of Ms. Herrera during this incredibly difficult time,” Police Chief Keith Cross said in a statement. “This tragedy serves as a reminder for all of us—both drivers and pedestrians—to stay aware of our surroundings and minimize distractions, especially when navigating busy intersections.”

The DuPage County Coroner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the exact manner and cause of death, according to the release.

The Aurora Police Department responded to the scene to reconstruct the crash. The intersection was closed for several hours while the investigation was ongoing.
