Aurora police said they are trying to find two men who shot a woman and stole her SUV Saturday afternoon from a Wendy's parking lot.

AURORA, IL — A woman was in critical condition Sunday after being shot during a carjacking the day before in a parking lot on Aurora’s West Side, according to police. Aurora police said they are searching for two men who shot her and stole her car, a red Hyundai Santa Fe SUV.

Witnesses told officers that two black men in a black Ford Escape pulled up next to the woman’s SUV and forced her out before shooting her in the back, police said. The woman was in critical condition Sunday, but police said she is expected to survive after being transferred to a Chicago-area trauma center.

Police said they later learned the Ford Escape that the men left behind in the Wendy’s parking lot was stolen in a DeKalb County carjacking less than an hour before.

Aurora police are asking residents in the area to call 911 immediately if they see the woman’s vehicle, which is described as a red 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV with an Illinois license plate reading AE89203.

A GoFundMe launched for the woman's medical expenses said the assailants "yanked her from her vehicle, shot her in the back leaving her laying in the Wendy's restaurant parking lot with shattered vertebrae and a bullet lodged in her spinal cord." The fundraiser says the woman is a mother of two sons and faces a long road to recovery.

Police said the carjacking Saturday afternoon was the second armed carjacking in Aurora since the start of 2020. In that carjacking, which occurred in late November, a car was stolen from a home several weeks after burglars stole a spare set of keys from the home, police said.
