Civil War Rededication Event Scheduled for Sunday

The Village of Barrington Hills will honor the 94 Barrington citizens who signed up to serve in the Civil War.

President Abraham Lincoln heard from his Generals that the volunteer soldiers from Barrington, Illinois were best all-around because they could hunt for game and prepare food, repair tents and wagons, take care of livestock, and still fight compared to the soldiers from cities who knew very little about those things.

The Village of Barrington Hills will honor the 94 Barrington citizens who signed up to serve in the Civil War during a special rededication event on Sunday, July 1 at 3 p.m. at Sutton and Dundee Roads in Barrington Hills.

The names of these Barrington citizen-soldiers are memorialized on a large, glacial stone placed adjacent to the cemetery and Restoration of the area surrounding the stone and plaque has been ongoing.

This area was the center of civilization in what is now known as Barrington Township, prior to towns or villages being settled or the railroad being laid. With the Algonquin Trail (now Route 62) running through the area, important military government personnel are reported to have come along that trail, stopping at the stage post at Barrington Center.

General Grant was just one of those. It is thought that Abe Lincoln may have stopped over on his way between his jobs on the Fox and Mississippi Rivers and Chicago when he was a young man.

The Ceremony of Rededication will feature posting of the colors, raising the American flag, brief honoring remarks offered by Village and Township leadership, with full honor salute by American veterans (VFW).

The community is invited to attend this commemoration for the 150th anniversary of the Civil War with special remembrances of the Barrington residents that responded to the call to serve on our behalf.
