New Fareboxes Installed at Train Station

Crews are hard at work today installing the new commuter parking fareboxes at the Barrington train station. Commuters will no longer be able to use smart cards. Instead, they can pay with cash or credit.

It's time to retire your commuter parking lot smart cards.  The fareboxes at the Barrington train station are being totally overhauled today.

The Village of Barrington is working with Total Parking Solutions to remove the old fareboxes and replace them with new machines that accept cash and credit card payments.  Payment by phone is also possible. The new machines will be fully operational tomorrow.

Village Manger Jeff Lawler said the main reason for the switch is customer convenience.

"The new fareboxes take debit and credit cards, the old ones didn't," Lawler said.  "The newer machines are quicker so the time it takes for the customer to stand in line to use the machines will speed the process up."

Lawler said two of the fareboxes will also be placed inside of the train station, which will help customers during inclement weather.

If you have an unused balance on your smart card, click here for a refund application.  Village officials tell us not to expect immediate reimbursement. Each refund check has to be approved at the village board meeting, which takes place every other Monday.

Staff members from the village and Total Parking Solutions will be at the train station tomorrow to answer questions and assist residents using the new fareboxes.
