A Bolingbrook business owner was recently honored by the White House.
Dr. Sivalingam Sivananthan was one of 11 people in the country to be named a "Champion of Change," an honor given to immigrant innovators.
Sivananthan moved to Chicago from Sri Lanka in 1982 to pursue his doctorate, according to the Chicago Tribune, and is now the director of the Microphysics Laboratory at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
He founded EPIR Technologies 15 years ago, developing infrared technology for the U.S. military. He founded Sivananthan Laboratories in 2009, where his research is being applied to solar power cells. Both businesses are located in Bolingbrook.
Sivananthan has also been named a fellow of SPIE, a prestigious international society for those studying optics, photonics and imaging, and an "American by Choice" award from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security this year, according to the Trib.
