Avoid Parking Tickets: Sweeping Starts Monday on a Street Near You

Residents may consider having to occasionally move their cars a burden. But it's certainly not as painful as a parking ticket.

As street sweeping season encroaches, local officials are asking that drivers educate themselves on the city's schedule for the work. 

Workers will not be using the new ward boundaries for sweeping schedules, according to a notice sent this week by 32nd Ward Ald. Scott Waguespack, and the service is set to begin April 1. It will be ongoing through Nov. 1. 

Chicago uses mechanical street sweepers that operate year-round except during inclement winter weather, according to the city's website.

"To ensure curb-to-curb street cleaning, temporary parking restrictions are posted the day before the work is scheduled to begin on any street," it says. "Some arterial streets have permanently posted signs that specify a once-per-week period when parking is prohibited for street sweeping."

Vehicles left behind during the 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. windows are subject to towing, Waguespack said. 

"When your street is due for cleaning, please let your neighbors know as well," he said. "The only way the street sweepers can get the street cleaned is to have all cars cleared ..."

The streets are broken into sweeping sections. Review the boundaries in the accompanying chart to determine the section you live in and the dates it has been scheduled for street sweeping.

Temporary orange-colored signs are typically posted on light poles and trees one day before cleaning.
