New Moped Shop Rolls Into Bucktown

Norts Side residents looking to customize their mopeds now have another place to turn.

Customers at MOPED, 2068 N. Western Ave., in Bucktown, can buy new or vintage mopeds, or have their rides serviced, repaired or customized. The recently opened store also sells parts, accessories, helmets, riding gear and T-shirts, representatives said.

“With gas prices around $4 a gallon, more and more people are turning to mopeds—capable of getting 110 miles per gallon—to get around is a fraction of the price of filling up a car,” owner Will Andrews said, in a written statement. “Helping people enjoy mopeds is what we are all about. When we repair a moped, it is so rewarding to see a smiling customer riding away on a bike that may not have run for decades.”

Andrews’ personal passion for mopeds is evident. He's traveled around the country for their rallies and owns more than 20 of the mobiles, himself.

His store is peppered with vintage moped models and quirky accessories. It offers MOPED rescue at $20 each way for individuals who need help bringing in their mopeds for repairs. At $60 per hour, labor rates are competitive, Andrews said.

A $60 deposit is due upon drop-off for mechanics to diagnose any problems, and make simple repairs, if needed. Any additional labor is approved via phone prior to the work being done. With winter approaching, MOPED offers climate-controlled storage at $50 per month, per moped.

“Now is a great time to bring in your moped for repair during the fall and winter months, so you’re ready to ride in early spring,” Andrews said.
