Congress Theater Nearly Free of Violations

The nearby concert venue has been steadily chipping away at dozens of violations identified in a recent motion.

The Congress Theater is on its way to being cleared of violations, according to reports, but it must connect its backup generator and lighting system before any city agreement can be made.

A city attorney presented those provisions Thursday to a Cook County judge. The theater, just northwest of Bucktown's border at 2135 N. Milwaukee Ave., could soon open its second-floor balcony to concertgoers, according to a Sun-Times Media report.

"Congress attorney Demetris Kare said ComEd was scheduled to conduct a four-hour test on the system, essentially hooking up and testing the lighting and generator, but missed the appointment," the story says.

That appointment was part of the theater's journey to remedying 26 violations the city identified last month in an emergency motion that could have shuttered the theater for good.

"But the city later said the theater had successfully corrected the most dangerous of violations," the Sun-Times story says.
