Know Your Neighborhood: Bucktown-Wicker Park, Nearby Violent Offenders

Stay informed with a map of the known addresses of registered violent offenders in the 1st and 32nd wards, along with others in or near neighboring communities.

Patch took a look at the Illinois State Police Murderer and Violent Offender Against Youth Registry and found that there are currently two registered violent offender living in the Bucktown and Wicker Park areas.

An additional four offenders are reportedly living near the communities' borders and several are scattered throughout the North Side. 

Specifically, there is one in nearby Lincoln Park; two in Lake View; and three just west of the North Center and Lincoln Square borders.

Among the group is Wicker Park resident, Jorge Matos, 34, who is listed as a murderer. Matos was 19 when he was convicted. His victim was 16 years old, according to the registry. He lives in the 2200 block of West North Avenue. 

The other Wicker Park offender is Rafael Mendez, 45, of the 2200 block of West Armitage Avenue. His offense is categorized as "murder with intent to kill or injure." Mendez was 20 at the time of the offense, while his victim was 24, according to Illinois State Police. 

Know:

  • Under Andrea’s Law, convicted offenders are required to register as violent offenders for 10 years upon their release from prison.
  • Persons required to register as Violent Offender Against Youths are persons who have been convicted of an offense listed in Illinois Compiled Statutes 730 ILCS 154/5 when such charge was not sexually motivated and resulted in a conviction, a finding of not guilty by reason of insanity or a finding not resulting in an acquittal at a hearing for the alleged commission or attempted commission of the offense.
  • The Chicago Police Department discloses the name, address, date of birth, place of employment, school attended and offense or adjudication of all violent offenders against youth to the child care facilities, libraries, higher education facilities and school boards or administrative offices of all schools within the region.
