No New Remains Found as Garfield Park Lagoon Search Ends

Efforts to drain the lagoon ended Sunday, and a temporary dam was set to be removed Monday.

Chicago police have finished draining and searching the Garfield Park lagoon, and no additional body parts have been found.

“Various items” were recovered from the lagoon, and investigators are examining them to see if they are relevant to the death investigation of a 2-to-4-year-old toddler, whose hands, feet and head were found in the lagoon over Labor Day weekend, according to police.

The medical examiner is working on DNA and forensic testing for more clues, but the processing “will take time,” police say. Detectives are following up on missing persons cases and working with the FBI and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

The community is asked to report any suspicious activity, especially involving missing children. Area North detectives can be reached at 312-744-8261.

The child whose remains were found in the lagoon might be African-American. The lack of earrings or piercings on the head and short black hair suggest maybe the child is a boy, but authorities can’t rule out the possibility of the child being a girl.
