Old-Time Burger Joint Appears Beneath Old La Pasadita Location
A slice of history mysteriously appeared under the coat of a past business on Ashland Avenue.

Wicker Park residents got a pleasant surprise this weekend when workers began stripping the paint off La Pasadita at 1140 N. Ashland Ave.
White tile with a simple, "5¢ Hamburger" sign appeared beneath the bright yellow paint of the former Mexican restaurant. The words "Snappy Service System" lined the sign, which dates it to a restaurant chain from the 1930s.
Snappy Service began in Missouri, according to Josh Ozersky's book The Hamburger: A History. The chain was one of many White Castle rip-offs that developed after the restaurant's creation in 1921.

La Pasadita moved out of the space on Ashland rather than pay increased rent, Grubstreet Chicago reported.
