A contractor is breathing life into what was once a single-room occupancy Wicker Park hotel.
Michael Downing and @properties agent Robert Baum are planning to convert the three-story building at 1659 W. Division St. into a corporate housing-hostel hybrid, where they’ll rent rooms to companies bringing out-of-town employees, according to Chicago Real Estate Daily.
“Holiday Jones, as the property will be called, will have 35 rooms, each offering about 150 square feet and costing $70 to $150 per night … “ the story says. “Firms that ink contracts for longer-term stays for workers will get lower rates, about $66 per night, or $2,000 a month.”
The previous owner of the building was charging around $400 per month.
There was one worker inside the building on Wednesday, where light demolition had started. The ceiling had been shredded and appliances lined a west wall.
The building permit was issued May 1, according to the city of Chicago.
