Designer Wins Award for Long Grove Home Remodeling Project

The addition allows two families to live in the same residence with their own privacy.

LONG GROVE, IL - Multi-generational households are continuing to grow and with that comes the need for more living space.

In the case of a remodeling project at one Long Grove home, suburban designer Maury Jones configured an addition that merged two families, all while giving them the privacy and independence they were seeking. Jones works for Normandy Design Build Remodeling and the execution of her Long Grove home project received acclaim from the design industry, earning a Remodeling Excellence Award from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) of Greater Chicagoland, according to a news release.

“While two families would be living in the home, it was important to give the appearance of a single family home from the exterior,” said Jones. “We achieved this through a garage addition, which provided parking and a separate, discrete entrance.”

“Since the garage stall was joined with the existing garage, it also eliminated the need for a separate driveway,” Jones said.

Overall, the new addition has the feel of a town home, with a separate kitchen, dining area, powder room, laundry room, mudroom and family room. An interior door also connects the new family room to the family room of the existing home. It can be open for blending of the families or remain closed for privacy. The second floor includes two bedrooms, a master suite and half bathroom.

Special care was also taken to match the exterior of the home and the existing home was also updated to match the new addition.

“Matching interior and exterior finishes will ensure that the addition looks like an original part of the home,” Jones said.

Jones’s home addition was one of 13 residential renovations to receive a Remodeling Excellence Award. Winners were determined by a panel of industry experts who evaluated each project on problem solving, functionality, aesthetics, craftsmanship, innovation and degree of difficulty.

“I enjoyed the challenge of creating independent living spaces these families and am honored that the execution was so well received by my peers,” said Jones.
