Green Fair Offers Fun, Education and Unique Recycling Opportunities

More than 20 exhibitors will share the value of reuse, reduce and recycling Sunday at Buffalo Grove's second annual Green Fair.

The Buffalo Grove Park District's Environmental Action Team will sponsor the event from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 30 at Mike Rylko Community Park. The event will be staged next to the farmers market, which runs during the same hours.

  • Green Fair guests are invited to:
  • Drop off old bikes and bike parts at the Working Bikes booth.
  • Drop off used athletic shoes, which will be recycled into material for sports surfaces.
  • Drop off used crayons which will be repurposed into super crayons for children with special needs.
  • Drop off used clothing which will be processed through I Collect.
  • Recycle compact fluorescent bulbs, hearing aids, gently used books and alkaline or rechargeable batteries.
  • Donate old yoga mats to be reused or recycled.
  • See how much energy they generate on a bicycle-to-electricity machine.
  • Learn about upcycling – the process of converting waste materials into new products rather than filling landfills.
  • Make a pine cone bird feeder and learn about the Buffalo Grove Park District’s Dogs in History program.
  • Learn about water conservation; take a water environmental pledge for a chance to win a repurposed rain barrel.
  • Learn about what a watershed is and the new Buffalo Creek Clean Watershed Partnership.
  • See examples of local wildlife and see and feel animal skins.
  • Stop by the Rotary Club’s booth to learn how they are helping Guatemalans by providing safe drinking water with a filtering system.
  • Watch a crochet demonstration of used plastic bags being repurposed into sleeping mats for the homeless.
  • Get advice from experienced gardeners from the Buffalo Grove Garden Club.
  • Climb onto a real Waste Management recycling truck.
  • Bring kids to the craft booth to make something from discarded objects.
