Champaign Delivers Arts, Technology And Innovation

Every town has its traditions. Check out these fun facts about what makes Champaign so special.

Champaign is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that Champaign has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.

A few things to know:

  • Champaign and the surrounding area is a hub for the arts and is filled with impressive public art displays. Take a stroll down Neil Street and you'll be able to spot murals, sculptures and other creative pieces that add to the city's vibrant culture.
  • The Virginia Theatre, a historic movie palace, was built in 1921 and has since been restored to its former glory. It now hosts concerts, movies and events year-round, and is a must-visit spot for anyone interested in experiencing a piece of Champaign's history.
  • For a fun outdoor activity, head to the Curtis Orchard and Pumpkin Patch while in season, where you can pick apples and pumpkins and enjoy other seasonal activities. There's also a small petting zoo and a playground for kids to enjoy.
  • Champaign is home to the William M. Staerkel Planetarium, which offers educational and entertaining shows about astronomy and space. It's a great way to spend an afternoon or evening with family and friends or to learn something new about the cosmos.
  • The Champaign County History Museum is a must-visit destination for history buffs. Originally located at Wilber Mansion, the museum currently at Cattle Bank features exhibits on local history, including the early settlers of Champaign County, life in the 19th century and the impact of the University of Illinois on the region.
  • The nearby University of Illinois Arboretum is a beautiful 57-acre green space located on the university's campus. The arboretum features gardens, walking trails and a variety of plant species, making it a peaceful and scenic spot for a leisurely stroll or picnic.
  • The Champaign Farmers Market is a popular destination for fresh produce, baked goods and other locally sourced goods. Open from May to October, the market is a great place to meet local farmers and artisans and support the local economy.
  • Champaign is also home to the Krannert Art Museum, which features over 11,000 works of art, including a diverse collection of modern and contemporary art, African art and photography. The museum is always free and open to the public, making it a great destination for art lovers and curious visitors alike.
  • The Champaign area has a rich music scene, with a variety of venues that host live performances throughout the year. From the Canopy Club to the nearby Rose Bowl Tavern, there's something for every music lover in Champaign.
  • The Staerkel Planetarium isn't the only space-related attraction in Champaign. The UIUC Aerospace Engineering Department has wind tunnels on campus that are used for research and testing.
  • If you're looking for outdoor recreation, the Champaign Park District has a ton of parks and facilities, including sports fields, playgrounds and hiking trails. There's also the Lake of the Woods Forest Preserve, which features a golf course, botanical garden and boating and fishing opportunities.
  • Champaign-Urbana is known for its engineering and technology, and it's home to numerous tech companies and startups. The Research Park at the University of Illinois is a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship, as well as great place to learn about the latest advances in science and technology.
