Northern Illinois Community Initiatives (NICI) awarded a $100,000 Impact Grant to Chicago TREND, a social enterprise formed in 2016 with a mission to catalyze and accelerate strategic commercial development that strengthens urban neighborhoods, with a focus on communities of color. TREND currently owns several shopping centers including one in south suburban Cook County. The grant from NICI will help Chicago TREND support economic mobility and entrepreneurship in Olympia Fields. Impact Grants build up NICI’s mission to attract investment, mobilize partners and connect vital resources to underserved communities in Nicor Gas' service areas. NICI was founded in 2021 by Nicor Gas through a $20 million endowment from its parent company, Southern Company Gas.
